New & Expanding Companies:

Baxano Surgical | Advanced Medical Technologies | Expanding

Baxano Surgical, a medical device company, has expanded its office space at Horizon at Six Forks by 8,504 square feet. Baxano Surgical focuses on designing, developing, and marketing minimally invasive products to treat degenerative conditions of the spine affecting the lumbar region.

 

DataStaff, Inc. | Software/IT | Expanding

DataStaff, Inc., a contract professional services organization, has hired more than 75 employees this year. DataStaff assists Fortune 1000 corporations, government agencies, and healthcare institutions achieve their business objectives through its software and IT system.

 

IEM | Defense Technologies | Expanding

IEM, a global security consulting firm, is moving its headquarters operations from Durham to the Concourse Lakeside office park campus on Slater Road in Morrisville. IEM has leased 14,664 square feet of office space at the Morrisville park, and it expects to finalize the move in early 2014. IEM employs about 60 people in the region who provide international risk-management consulting services to government agencies and private businesses.

 

Mann+Hummel | Smart Grid | New

Mann+Hummel, a German filtration manufacturer, selected Raleigh for its North American headquarters, specifically to house its automotive aftermarket and industrial filtration divisions. The company expects to have more than 60 employees between its two Raleigh facilities in the next two years. Currently, it has 25 employees in Raleigh. The company already has started to move into two spaces, an 8,000-square-foot facility on Corporate Center Drive and the 3,000-square-foot Centennial Campus lab in the Partners I building.

 

Teleflex Medical | Advanced Medical Technologies | Expanding
Teleflex Medical, a provider of medical appliances and supplies, will invest more than $20 million and create 75 new jobs in Morrisville over the next three years. The new positions will pay an average of $72,000 per year. The company, which currently employs 442 staff at two locations in Durham County, will consolidate all operations into 130,000 square feet of space in Morrisville's planned Perimeter Three building. 

UberConference | Software/IT | New
UberConference, a visual conference-calling software company, opened up a new satellite office in downtown Raleigh at 220 Fayetteville St. UberConference's new location is approximately 3,000 square feet, and the company plans to hire 20 people. UberConference, which was developed by the team that created Google Voice, provides traditional audio call, but adds a dashboard people can access on laptops or mobile devices so they can see who is on the call or talking on a conference call.

 

Marketing Initiatives: 

Bullet  The Internet Summit was held at the Raleigh Convention Center Nov. 12 -- 14. This year's conference focused on the latest in digital media and marketing while incorporating a tech track, startup summit mini-conference, and intensive workshops. Michael Haley, Wake County Economic Development project manager, and Brittany Cheatham, Wake County Economic Development marketing assistant, attended the event to keep informed of industry trends, network with industry leaders, and spread awareness of local initiatives. More than 100 speakers from the most well-known brands and companies shared their insights during the event, which drew more than 2,000 attendees. The 2013 Internet Summit is the Southeast's largest digital event.

 Since Jan. 1, 2013, Wake County Economic Development has had 72 new projects and 38 site visits. Wake County has had 88 announcements of companies moving or expanding to the area, creating 5,011 jobs, and investing more than $274 million. 

New and Expanding Announcements by Cluster:

Of the 88 new and expanding announcements in 2013, 59 of those (67 percent) are in Wake County Economic Development's cluster industries.
