A great deal has been written about big data and its role in data driven decision-making, but how can companies use it to make a difference within their business environment?

That is one of the topics covered in a new one-day course, Big Data Analytics: Strategic and Operational Data Driven Decision-Making, to be held on Tuesday, August 27, 2013, at the NC State University Hunt Library in Raleigh, N.C.

Focus: How to apply big data to strategic decision-making

The content includes how to use big data for analysis and critical strategic decision-making regarding:

What new businesses to enter or new products to develop

  • What potential new customers to approach
  • How to position products
  • What competitors might do

The program was developed for individuals with the following responsibilities: business development, mergers and acquisition, product development, technology management executives and IT professionals with responsibilities to support business decision makers.

The day-long program includes a free morning session, at which instructors will provide a framework for understanding how to apply big data analytics to decision-making.

Specific topics include:

  • Forming the Question: Critical Thinking
  • The Eight-Step Process to Big Data Analytics
  • Data Driven Decision-making

The afternoon session will take participants deeper into the process with a workshop that includes structured exercises designed to enable participants to:

  • Understand the variety of data analytics techniques available to aid strategic decision-making
  • Learn the steps for using big data to make strategic decisions
  • Know the technical and human resources needed to implement big data analytics
  • Plan how to acquire and implement big data capability

Instructors are NC State University faculty members in computer science, supply chain management, big data analytics and data driven decision-making, and innovation management. They have been working together for more than two years on applications of big data to data driven decision-making processes.

The team has previously developed and taught a course on the topic in NC State Poole College of Management’s Jenkins MBA program, and mentored graduate students as they applied the big data techniques to real world projects in biosciences, innovation management and other industries.

Additional details about the program are available on the NC State Poole College's Executive Education website.
